Excellent start for the Demons. NSU racks up 466 yards total offense while holding Henderson State to 158 total yards.
Highest point total since the 41-21 win over SFA to end the 05 season. NSU didn't score more than 26 points in a game last year.
Running game was so powerful that there wasn't a need to pass.
Lot of good things came out of the game and there are some things to work on, but they can be corrected.

Who, what, where, when, why as it relates to Northwestern State athletics- that's The Daily Demon. What really doesn't fit into our traditional press releases, you'll get here from several members of the NSU athletic department staff. It might be updates on former student-athletes. It may be that somebody called to say hello, or dropped by. It's all about strengthening the special bond that the NSU family shares. If you've got news or notes, please e-mail thedailydemon@gmail.com and let us know!

Early fourth quarter
The outcome of the game is no longer in doubt. This is on pace to be the largest margin of victory in a season opener since a 49-0 win over Hanover College in 1967.
After three quarters, NSU has 402 yards total offense, 326 rushing and 76 passing. Lawrence and Edmond are both over 100 yards rushing.

Late third quarter
The pace has slowed for most of the quarter. After recovering a muffed punt, the Demons get into position to score after a pass from Edmonds to Ben Bailey at the Reddie 5. Edmonds caps the drive with an 8-yard run. He has 10 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Henderson State quarterback Roch Charpentier is still playing despite a left wrist injury.

Early third quarter
It is just getting worse for Henderson State. Their top two quarterbacks, Roch Charpentier and Garrett Manning, have broken wrists.
Demon offense keeps rolling. Lawrence scores on a 22-yard run in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter. PAT is no good. NSU up 34-6.
Next drive ends in a Reddie interception.

Late second quarter
Demons stall, then Reddies block a punt at the NSU 33. Purple Swarm defense stiffens and pushes the Reddies back to the 40 and get the ball on downs.
Offense takes over and quickly move to the red zone. Richuel Massey has two nice runs.
Edmond to Guice for the 3-yard TD pass. Demons up 28-6 with 41 seconds to go in the first half. A pretty good first half. Not perfect but a lot of things to be happy with.

Early second quarter
Demons rush for 142 yards in the first quarter.
Drew Branch gets a series in the second quarter. Demons used a play with both Branch and Edmonds in the game. Branch overthrew Edmonds in the flat.
Branch goes back in after Edmonds scrambles for a first down. Edmonds showed great patience, waiting and waiting for a receiver to get open. Finally he tucks it away and runs for 11 to keep the drive going.
Lawrence scores on an 18-yard run with 10:34 to go. NSU up 21-6. Lawrence has 18 rushes for 107 yards and two TDs. That's his fourth career 100-yard game.

Demons add to lead
Edmonds goes 53 yards for a touchdown to put NSU up 14-7. That 53-yard run is longer than any play by the Demons last year.

Mid first quarter
Excellent blocking by the offensive line on the first drive. Huge holes for Byron Lawrence to run through. Germayne Edmonds had two nice runs including one early in the drive when he had a run/pass option and kept it for a nice gain.
Edmonds keeps for the score. NSU up 7-6 with 8:49 to go in the first. Nine plays 55 yards, all on the ground.

Early game
Former Demon quarterback Roch Charpentier got the start for the Reddies. Great pressure by the Demon defense, but NSU muffs the punt and Henderson State gets a break. HSU using two quarterbacks.
Turnover leads to a touchdown. Charpentier throws a nice pass to an open receiver. Henderson up 6-0.

The rains came
About five minutes before kickoff, a heavy thunderstorm has hit the stadium. A strong gust of wind blew away the tent the team uses for its pregame entrance. Fans headed for cover, but the band and spirit groups stayed in place. According to local radar, the rain should be intense but brief.

Change for the band
The Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band took a different path into Turpin Stadium today. Instead of marching from A.A. Fredericks to the stadium, the SON visited the tailgate area to help fire up the fans there. They then went into the stadium and are setting up for their pregame show.

The Former Demons tent is electric
More fun than a little bit.
The Former Demons tent set up for the Centennial Celebration reunion of former players, coaches and staff members is a handshake and hug haven.
Along with dozens of reunions going on simultaneously, there are some very cool mutual admiration societies being formed, as Demons from the '50s visit with Demons from the '90s, for example.
The Storytelling Contest -- lots of winners, not any losers -- got off to a big start with current Demons assistant coach and Top 100 Demons of All-Time selection Roy Locks. If the players of the "days gone by" wondered if they are remembered, Locks assured them they are.
He got some laughs when he said that the players he is coaching now think HE is old. Locks, whose last season was 2002, when he won All-America honors, said when he played he looked up to Demons like Gary Reasons and Bobby Hebert and was especially thrilled to form a friendship with Charlie Tolar.
"One day this little old man came up to me and asked me if I was Roy Locks, and I said yes. He asked if I played linebacker, which I did, and I said yes. He said his name was Charlie Tolar, and he hated linebackers! Well, I knew his name growing up in Orange, Texas, being a Houston Oilers fan, and I knew he played at NSU, and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship between me and Mr. Charlie. I loved talking with him about football but more about life."

Gameday buzz - 10:30 a.m
Breakfast was being served in the Demon Alley Tailgating Zone Saturday morning. Almost a dozen RVs were parked and in business, with three more from Henderson State sitting over in the soccer/softball lot reserved for Reddies followers. Of course, many more will be pulling in during the next couple of hours.
One newcomer to the Demon roster was a little amazed Friday afternoon at the day-early influx of the tailgaters. He's a newcomer to the Deep South and was stunned to see people set up and ready to roll by the time the Demons arrived at Turpin Stadium for their Friday afternoon walk-through.
It was an equally stunning sight for those of us last year in the season-opener at Kansas, when we arrived at the stadium at 10 a.m. to set up the radio equipment and case out the joint. Kickoff was the same as tonight, 6 p.m., but there was ZERO, NADA signs of tailgating by Jayhawks fans.
We were told the tailgating there began about three hours before kickoff. When we returned to the stadium about that time, the scouting report was borne out.
Talk about a culture shock. So I guess I can understand what the out-of-state Demon experienced yesterday.
Now, over to the tailgating area to see what they've got cooking ...
... more later today, including hopefully updates from the Bahamas, where the Demon basketball team is in action this weekend.

Vic up quick on Friday morning
Vic the Demon made an appearance on KALB-TV's Jambalaya morning show today.
The No. 1 Demon shared the spotlight with proud NSU alumnus and KALB morning show host Melinda Johnson, who called earlier this week asking if Vic or some NSU folks could help generate excitement for this weekend's season-opening game.
Vic was rolling early. His air time was 6:30 a.m. in Alexandria. No word if he just stayed up all night, but chances are he couldn't sleep. Too excited!
Seriously, thanks to new marketing assistant director Brian Seiler for making Vic come to life earlier than perhaps ever before!

The juices are flowing
The NSU Demons have TREMENDOUS fans.
Many of the most passionate take the time to contact us and share their pride and excitement. One friend in Baton Rouge, whose business is having "school colors day" Friday, is really juiced up.
His bosses have all the staff offering some witticisms as to why they will be sporting their school colors on Friday. I bet nobody tops this by my buddy Glenn Paddie:
"I’ll be wearing purple, but it will be trimmed in orange and white….no it’s not Clemson, but does pack 1-AA kryptonite….shout out to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. Yeah, yeah…I hear the groans from the big time fans, but just call me the loyalty man. Staying true cause I have to!!!!!!"
He is not alone, not by a long shot!
We had nearly 80 people packed into the Stroud Room today for the first Demon QB Club luncheon, eager to see the excitement unfold Saturday at Turpin Stadium. The group also heard from volleyball coach Brittany Uffelman, soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell and soccer standout Gabby Assayag, who previewed their season opening games away from home upcoming this weekend.

Boys will be boys
Especially kickers.
Let's face it, there's only so much practicing kickers can do any given week. They are traditionally the guys who get stuck with chain gang duties during practice drills, for example.
That's what was going on when buddies and competitors Lee Scott and Robert Weeks "pranked" each other during Tuesday morning's practice.
I can't exactly say what Lee did to Robert, except to say it was funny and no harm was done.
Robert bounced back a little while later. While they were holding the chains, Robert scooped up a couple handfuls of the rubber pellets that provide the base for the artificial turf at Turpin Stadium, and snuck up behind Lee, who was dutifully watching the action on the field. Suddenly, it was raining rubber on Lee's closely shorn locks. Gave him the rubber, I mean rugged, look.
Practice was hardly playful for the bulk of the team, but the energy and enthusiasm was obvious. These Demons know they have a tough opener and they are very determined going into it.

Celeste comes by
The "First Mom" of Demon football dropped by to say hello Tuesday.
Celeste Waddell, the incredible mother of the late Chris Waddell (see the story on nsudemons.com if you don't know the background), paid a visit to head coach Scott Stoker, athletic director Greg Burke and others in the athletic department around lunchtime as she was traveling back home to Dallas from her hometown of New Orleans.
She said she knew she was back home in the Crescent City as soon as she hit her first pothole. Roads in DFW are a little better, she says.
She pledged to make it back for a home game, perhaps as early as Saturday's season opener. This group of 2007 seniors were classmates with Christopher.
A couple of interesting notes from a woman who was one of the heroes of the Charity Hospital ordeal during Hurricane Katrina (I still have ABC's 20/20 newsmagazine show spotlighting Celeste and her sixth-floor mates saved on my TiVO) ... her home in Dallas is located on a hill. No chance of flooding there ... didn't know this, but she is an avid golfer. She won't golf in the heat of summer, but she does love to play!

It's game week!
It's back, it's "Demons at a Glance" on this website. It's the ultimate reminder that this week, the results begin to count for NSU teams as the 2007-08 athletic year gets started.
Excited? You betcha. No further proof needed than watching football coach Scott Stoker make a fast-paced loop through his players as they closed in a circle to end Monday afternoon's practice in Turpin Stadium.
For a half-minute, it was riveting stuff to watch, and the emotion was palpable among the players and coaches. It was a great reminder that at its core, these are young people playing games, and they're supposed to be fun.
Today the calls and e-mails began streaming in, asking about the 100-year Demon Football Reunion plans Saturday. Former players and coaches and family members literally from across the country are excited about coming back home to NSU Saturday to rekindle memories of some of the best years of their lives, and to renew friendships.
Volleyball's first serve comes Friday, and the first shot on goal (officially) for soccer is Friday night, both on the road. Kudos to the Demon soccer team for a very solid performance in its exhibition game at home Friday night. Although Rice got the only goal, there were a lot of signs to remind us that any Jimmy Mitchell-coached team is going to be a formidable one.
